sleep apneaDo you wake up every morning feeling as if you didn’t sleep at all? Is your work performance suffering because of daytime fatigue? Do you have chronic health problems that are worsening by the day? If so, you may be suffering from sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder that, if left untreated, can lead to multiple health problems or accidents.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by interrupted breathing while you sleep. These abnormal pauses in your breathing can last for a few seconds or even minutes, which deprives the brain of oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form and is usually caused by the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapsing during sleep.
  • Central sleep apnea (CSA) is caused by an imbalance in the brain that fails to trigger the body to breathe regularly.

What are the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea?

A person suffering from sleep apnea often does not even know it is happening. Aside from the daytime symptoms of fatigue, you may not be aware that there is a problem at all because it occurs during sleep. A patient is often prompted to seek treatment after a loved one observes the breathing difficulties in progress.

Am I at risk for sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea can happen to anyone, but you are at a higher risk if you are:

  • Over 40
  • Male
  • Overweight
  • A sufferer of gastroesophageal reflux, allergies, or sinus problems

What are the treatments for sleep apnea?

CPAP machines are a commonly prescribed treatment for sleep apnea. With this therapy, you wear a facial mask during sleep that forces air pressure down your throat and keeps the airway open. This therapy is very effective, but many patients find it uncomfortable.

A more comfortable therapy that Dr. Moiceanu recommends is a mandibular repositioning device known by the brand name Klearway. It is a mouth appliance that fits over the teeth and repositions the lower jaw during sleep so that the airway is opened. An OSA patient himself, Dr. Moiceanu has been using Klearway for years and frequently recommends it to his sleep apnea patients.

If you suspect that your fatigue is being caused by sleep apnea, call Dr. Moiceanu today at (510) 758-7222 to schedule your consultation. Hilltop Family Dental gladly treats patients in Richmond, San Pablo, El Sobrante, Vallejo, Pinole, El Cerrito, Hercules, Benicia, and the surrounding areas.
