Non-Metallic Tooth Restorations

Tooth RestorationsThere was once a time when just about everyone flashed a mouth full of silver fillings when they had a good laugh. These (tooth restorations) dark amalgam fillings were commonly used because they were cheap and very effective, but controversy has arisen in recent years about their safety due to their mercury content. While the ADA has declared amalgam fillings safe for most people, why would you choose to riddle your teeth with dark spots when there are more esthetically-pleasing options available? With non-metallic restorations, you can confidently throw your head back and laugh knowing that the only thing people will see is healthy-looking white teeth.

What non-metallic restorations are available?

Tooth restoration refers to the act of restoring the function and structure of a tooth that is damaged due to decay or trauma. Dr. Moiceanu offers several options for non-metallic tooth restorations:

  • Tooth-colored fillings. Made from composite resins, tooth-colored fillings can be altered to match the exact shade of your natural teeth. They are known as direct fillings because the soft filling material is placed directly onto the teeth and then hardened with a special light.
  • Porcelain inlays. These are known as indirect fillings, because a hard porcelain filling is made outside of the mouth and then bonded onto the tooth. Inlays are placed in the indented parts of your teeth.
  • Porcelain onlays. Also an indirect filling, a porcelain onlay is made outside of the mouth and then placed where there is decay or damage on the top projections of the teeth.

Why choose non-metallic tooth restorations?

Composite resin fillings, inlays, and onlays require less tooth reduction than amalgam fillings. Preserving more of your natural tooth structure can prevent further problems down the road. Composite fillings have an advantage over amalgam fillings because they are more durable, do not expand, support the tooth structure, and look more natural. Porcelain inlays and onlays are also a great choice because they are nearly invisible and can last up to 30 years, which is three to four times longer than the life span of an amalgam filling.
