How Do You Measure a Great Smile?

Measure a Great SmileWe all know when someone’s smile or facial appearance seems “off” in some way, but we may not be able to pinpoint exactly what the issue is. Perhaps the midline of the teeth doesn’t match up with the middle of the face, or maybe the smile shows a bit too much gum. The untrained eye cannot always catch these slight imperfections, but cosmetic dentists are highly-trained in applying global esthetic criteria when analyzing patients for a smile makeover. Here are the things Dr. Moiceanu will look for during your cosmetic dentistry consultation.

Facial and Dento-Facial Analysis

First, Dr. Moiceanu will analyze your facial structure and your teeth to determine if there are problems with balance and symmetry, such as a receding chin or a malocclusion that needs to be corrected. Your overall facial structure will also determine what size and shape your teeth should be for optimum esthetically-pleasing results.

Dento-Labial Analysis

This step involves looking at the relationship between the lips and the teeth. How much of your teeth show when you smile? How much tooth shows when your mouth is at rest? Cosmetic dentists use a range of measurements to determine what constitutes an esthetically-attractive smile in which the lips and teeth work well together.

Dento-Gingival Analysis

The ratio of gum to tooth structure should be balanced. If one element over-dominates the other, your smile will not be attractive. Small teeth with too much gum showing or large teeth with no gum showing at all will need to be corrected.

Dental Analysis

Finally, Dr. Moiceanu will focus on the teeth themselves. Are their size and shape appropriate for your facial structure? Are they too large or too small for your mouth? Dr. Moiceanu can easily transform the look of your teeth with bonding, veneers, or crowns so that they provide balance to the rest of your face.
