Cosmetic DentistryIn these modern times, advancements in cosmetic dentistry allow more people than ever to enjoy a full and bright smile. The idea of improving one’s smile through aesthetic procedures, however, is not a new one. Dr. Stefan Moiceanu, your Richmond, CA, dentist, briefly describes the journey that cosmetic dentistry has taken to reach the level of prominence it enjoys today.

The Beginning of Cosmetic Dentistry

The idea of clean teeth seems to be a bit older than the idea of pretty teeth. As early as 3,000 BC, our ancestors had devised ways to clean their teeth using nothing more than sticks from trees. The Egyptians, however, sought to replace the teeth they lost early on, and would sometimes hammer sea shells into their gums. Around 700 BC, the Etruscans began using bone and ivory to carve dentures to fill the gaps in their smiles. Other materials used included human and animal teeth, which smelled offensive and didn’t last long. By 200 AD, the Etruscans had grown wiser concerning dentistry, and began fashioning crowns and bridges made from precious gold.

The Growth of Cosmetic Dentistry

By the 1400s, the Dark Ages had erased much of what humans had learned up to that point, including knowledge of medicine and dentistry. As those before them, the Europeans began carving dentures from bone and ivory. While sometimes elegant, these dentures could often be very uncomfortable. By the 1700s, human teeth were being used as dental implants, but much like dentures made from the same source, these didn’t last long as the bodies often rejected these implants. In the 1800s, precious metal made its debut back into the world of dentistry.

Modern Cosmetic Dentistry

Today, there are a plethora of cosmetic dental options to perfect your smile. If tooth stains or slight discoloration mar your smile, tooth-whitening can now be done in office or at home, depending on which solution best fits your schedule. If your teeth are chipped, crooked, or slightly misshapen, you may benefit from the use of porcelain veneers, which are thin layers of dental porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth to correct a variety of blemishes.
