Child’s Oral HealthAlthough your children do not keep their first set of teeth for life, caring for their wellbeing is as important as maintaining the health of your adult teeth. Teaching your children to care for there teeth is even more important, and can help prepare them for a lifetime of full and healthy smiles. As a family dentist in Richmond, California, Dr. Stefan Moiceanu provides you with these tips for optimizing the oral health of your young children.

Preparing for Primary Teeth

Good oral hygiene should begin before teeth erupt from the gumline. While your infant is still toothless, you can maintain clean and healthy gum tissue by wiping the gums with a clean, wet wash cloth or gauze. After each feeding and before bedtime are optimal times to clean your child’s mouth. To save time, you can keep two or three cloths or gauze pads clean and ready, increasing the chances that you’ll have one when you need it. Assuming your hands are freshly washed and clean, you can also rub a wet finger across your child’s gums.

The Beginning of Tooth Care

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that your child visit the dentist when the first tooth appears, or at least by the child’s first birthday. To keep the first tooth clean, gently brush it with a toddler’s toothbrush and plain water. You should not incorporate toothpaste in the routine until your child is old enough not to swallow it.

The Groundwork for Healthy Teeth

Caring for your child’s teeth is vitally important, but teaching them to care for their teeth by instilling proper oral hygiene habits at an early age is even more so. As all children grow, it will become impossible for you to maintain control of their daily habits. Make the routine fun by teaching them to brush their teeth to their favorite songs. This will also help ensure that they are brushing for an appropriate amount of time. You also must show them to floss their teeth at least once a day, preferably before bedtime, to remove plaque and food debris lodged between teeth.
