Infection Control in a Dental Office

Mar 14th, 2012 | By | Category: More dental news, Preventive Dentistry

infectionAt Hilltop Family Dental, we are committed to protecting the health of our patients and our staff, so we follow safety precautions set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA). Although we obtain a medical history from each patient, it is often difficult to identify which patients have infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, TB, and even the common cold, so we take universal precautions with every patient during every procedure to eliminate the spread of infection. To help protect our staff and prevent cross infection between patients, we take the following measures:

  • Discard reusable items in special containers
  • Disinfect all surfaces in the examining room, including the chair, dental light, countertops, and drawer handles
  • Sterilize reusable instruments in an autoclave at very high temperatures after each use
  • Wear heavy rubber gloves when cleaning exam rooms and instruments
  • Wear latex gloves during examinations and procedures, changing gloves between patients
  • Wash our hands first thing every morning, before putting on gloves, after removing our gloves, and anytime we touch a contaminated surface
  • Wear face masks and protective eyewear during examinations and dental procedures to protect the eyes, nose, and mouth from splatters of bodily fluids
  • Wear protective clothing such as aprons, and removing them when they become soiled and when we leave the examination area

At Hilltop Family Dental, we take every measure possible to ensure the health of our staff and patients.
