Dental Fillings that Look More Natural

Considering that 90% of adults under the age of 65 have had a cavity in at least one permanent tooth, chances are you have needed, or will need, a filling at least once in your life. Traditionally, dental fillings were most commonly made of metal. Yet, even on back teeth, metal fillings can shine noticeably whenever you smile. Many people have grievances with metal fillings, either for their indiscretion or for the health hazards that the metal could potentially pose. Fortunately, these concerns don’t have to be an issue when you choose more natural looking, tooth-colored fillings.

How Metal Fillings Became Popular

Before there was metal amalgam, the only viable material to use as a dental filling was gold. While pretty and prestigious, gold is expensive, and only a few people in society were able to afford them. In the 1800’s, metal amalgam was introduced to the United States as a durable, affordable alternative to gold fillings. Because the material contained mercury (which was shown to induce adverse health effects through exposure), some dentists refused to offer it to their patients. Nobody was falling sick from the cheaper restorations, though, so protests were drowned out by the needs of people who suffered tooth decay and could not afford gold dental work.

Today’s Tooth-Colored Fillings

Today, metal amalgam fillings are still popular and still considered safe by the ADA (although the association warns against these fillings for pregnant women, the elderly, and people with metal allergies). However, if you are skittish about metal fillings, or merely prefer a discrete alternative, your dentist may recommend a tooth-colored composite resin filling. This innovative material bonds to the surfaces of your tooth for a stronger and more supportive filling. The resin is also dyed to match the color of your natural teeth, so there is no flash to let people know that you’ve had dental work done.
