The Dos and Don’ts of Chewing Gum Presented by Dr. Moiceanu

Chewing GumDid you know that chewing gum after meals can actually be beneficial for your teeth? Since chewing gum stimulates saliva, the rinsing effect helps you cleanse your mouth of food particles, bacteria, and bad breath. Of course, not just any gum is good for your oral health. Our Richmond, CA dentist, Dr. Moiceanu recommends these “dos and don’ts” of chewing gum to help you benefit from this dental hygiene trick.

Do Choose Sugar-Free Gum

Since sugar is one of the main catalysts for cavities, chewing regular gum will reintroduce acid formation into your mouth and wreak havoc on your tooth enamel. This is the most important rule to remember when chewing gum: always choose sugar-free gum. Better yet, choose gum with xylitol. This natural sugar alternative actually strengthens tooth enamel and fights plaque.

Don’t Chew Gum for Hours

After picking a sugar-free gum that you like, remember to spit it out after 15 minutes of chewing at the most. Chewing gum any longer than this can actually create jaw issues. Jaw exhaustion from constant chewing or clenching contributes to TMJ disorder, a condition related to jaw pain.

Don’t Replace Brushing with Gum Chewing

Chewing gum after meals is a great way to prevent cavities and freshen your breath when you are not near a tooth brush. However, chewing gum will not replace the scrubbing and plaque removing benefits of brushing and flossing. Complete oral hygiene involves twice daily brushing and flossing to prevent cavities and keep gum disease at bay.
