Richmond Family DentistWhat is a sealant?

A sealant is a thin plastic coating, painted onto the surface of a tooth. Sealants are used as a preventive dentistry measure against cavities. The sealant acts as a barrier against food particles, bacteria, and acid erosion, protecting the tooth enamel and avoiding tooth decay. The thin plastic coating is usually painted over posterior teeth that have more cusps and crevices and are more difficult to reach. A durable prevention method, sealants can last from five to ten years.

Who can benefit from sealants?

Sealants are great for children who are still learning how to brush and floss properly. This will help younger kids with dental hygiene while they are in the developmental stage. While sealants are typically used for children, they are a great option for adults as well. For adults with disabilities, or those who have a hard time cleaning all of their teeth properly, sealants can prevent cavities by covering teeth in difficult to reach places.

Why does my child need an X-ray for a sealant?

Since sealants completely seal off the tooth, they can only be used on teeth without any decay present. Our family dentist, Dr. Moiceanu, will take radiographs of your child’s tooth to reveal cavities that would otherwise be hidden to the naked eye. After determining no tooth decay is present, Dr. Moiceanu can place the sealant.

What is involved with sealant placement?

After the X-ray reveals that no dental caries are present, our Richmond family dentist will prepare the tooth. This involves drying the tooth completely so that the sealant can be placed optimally. After drying the tooth, applying the thin plastic coating will only take a couple of minutes. Sealants require no local anesthesia.
